Working with college students/interns

CAREER PROGRAM

Mentor a Career Program intern during the summer
Alumni mentors are the cornerstone of the SEO Career Program as they play a vital role in helping interns navigate towards a successful summer.  Recently, SEO bolstered its mentoring initiative with: individualized mentoring prescriptions for intern growth and success; structured time frames and review topics for mentor/mentee interaction; and enhanced collaboration around reinforcing SEO principles and soft skills with interns.  Alumni mentors should have 2 years of professional experience and be willing to meet with their mentee(s) at least twice and maintain communication through the summer.

Mentor an SEO-U (pipeline program) participant in the spring/summer
SEO-U was created in 2006 as a pipeline initiative to offer preparatory support and guidance to underclassmen that are interested in SEO internship areas, specifically Asset Management, Corporate Finance, Global Corporate Leadership, Investment Banking Research, and Sales & Trading.  The program is designed to bolster participants' candidacy for the Career Program internship through training and educational resources, experiential learning, and mentoring/networking opportunities.  SEO-U cohort mentors will be recent alumni from the previous two Career Program classes and should be willing to meet with their mentee at least once and maintain communication through the summer.

Participate in training workshops at Career Program Orientation in May
Various alumni participate in Orientation and other training sessions to help students prepare to succeed in their internships, with networking, and preparing to interview at the end of the summer.  Please send an email to careerprogram@seo-usa.org if you are interested in volunteering in summer 2010.

COLLEGE SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Speak on a career exploration panel at the College Scholars Winter Retreat
The Winter Retreat provides over 100 college students who were in the SEO Scholars Program in high school with workshops on academic achievement, seminars on developing career readiness skills, and opportunities to meet and network with professionals.  Alumni and others who work in the various occupations of interest to the College Scholars are invited to speak on a small panel to share their career trajectory, as well as stay for the networking session to help students practice networking and learn more about potential careers.

Review resumes/cover letters or do mock interviews with College Scholars remotely
SEO supports College Scholars through regular communication with program staff, workshops, and help identifying and applying for internship opportunities relevant to their goals.  Summer internships are a critical element.  With the assistance of a volunteer, we are able to provide timely feedback and preparation to help students with their resumes, applications and interviews.

Provide a "job shadowing" opportunity for College Scholars interested in your field
College Scholars are interested in a wide variety of careers.  If you are open to having a student spend some time with you to learn about your on-the-job experience, please let us know.  The student will then make arrangements with you directly.

To get involved with any College Scholars activities, please contact Ays Necioglu, Assistant Director, at anecioglu@seo-usa.org or 646.435.9554.
