On November 28, 2006 SEO held the formal grand opening of its new headquarters in the heart of the financial district in New York City.
Bob McCann, Merrill Lynch vice chairman and president of its Global Private Client Group, along with SEO’s board, advisory boards, corporate partners, alumni, friends and staff attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for SEO’s new headquarters. SEO purchased its 20,000 square-foot office space within a new 72,000 square-foot nonprofit center in lower Manhattan, across the street from the New York Stock Exchange.
Stan O’Neal, Merrill Lynch chairman and CEO, is chairing The Campaign for SEO, which includes a $10 million phase to fund the new headquarters at 55 Exchange Place, consolidating SEO’s three former New York City locations. Mr. O’Neal is leading a fundraising effort that includes contributions of at least $1 million from each of the following SEO corporate and foundation partners: Bank of America, Citigroup Inc., Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Edwin Gould Foundation, Goldman, Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, and UBS.
“The grand opening was a wonderful and very emotional occasion for all of us with SEO,” said William Goodloe, SEO’s president and CEO. “We will be eternally grateful to Stan O’Neal and Merrill Lynch for their leadership in uniting Wall Street to support The Campaign for SEO.”
Merrill Lynch’s partnership with SEO spans more than two decades as a founding partner of the Career Program. “Supporting SEO is not only a good thing to do, it’s a smart thing to do,” said Mr. McCann, who serves as chairman of SEO’s Executive Advisory Board. “SEO’s mission meets corporate America’s demand for top talent by finding the best and the brightest young, diverse candidates, and working with them to realize their potential. SEO is valuable partner to Wall Street, and beyond, and we plan to build on today’s success to have an even larger impact in the years ahead.”
The relationship between SEO and Merrill Lynch is multifaceted. Jeff Edwards, chief financial officer of Merrill, serves as the firm’s SEO global relationship manager, focused on strengthening the partnership, expanding the firm’s participation in various SEO programs and improving the recruitment of SEO interns into full-time positions. The Merrill Lynch relationship team to SEO consists of: managing director Amy Ellis-Simon, vice chair, SEO board of directors; managing director Michael Ricciardi, SEO Chairman’s Advisory Council member; and Eddy Bayardelle, president of the Merrill Lynch Foundation.
More than 65 SEO alumni currently work at Merrill Lynch as full-time employees in various businesses and levels. During the past six years, 236 SEO alumni have joined Merrill Lynch for the summer through the Career Program. This year, Merrill Lynch hosted 30 SEO summer interns in eight different business groups in New York City and London.

SEO is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1963 as one of New York City’s first mentoring programs for high school students of color. Over the past four decades SEO has expanded its programs to benefit more than 5,000 young people, helping them develop throughout high school, college, and their careers. SEO has offices in New York City and London, more than 50 full-time staff, and programs that serve over 1,000 students and alumni each year.
SEO provides services through three major programs: the Scholars Program, the Career Program, and Alumni & Philanthropy Programs. The Scholars Program prepares high potential NYC public high school students to earn entry and excel at the nation’s most selective colleges and universities. Through the Career Program, more than 80% of college students completing summer internships are offered full-time jobs with participating investment banks, law firms and other leading companies. Alumni & Philanthropy Programs support the ongoing professional development and philanthropic effectiveness of SEO alumni and their colleagues.
